From the time he started building loudspeakers in his garage, Dave Wilson had one motivating passion: to make the reproduction of music sound as much like the real thing as possible. Although he is acutely aware of the limitations imposed on his dream by available driver technology, cabinet materials and the laws of physics, the goal remains the same. Dave is an idealist.

Wilson Audio has always rejected the notion of "perceived value." Our only metric is intrinsic value. In a market increasingly crowded with over $100k loudspeakers, how does the discerning audiophile distinguish authentic value from products merely wrapped in the mystique of exclusivity and high price?

If one's goal is to reproduce the sound of live music, logic suggests that at some point the designer must listen to his creation in order to understand how much (or how little) it sounds like the live event. Some designers in the industry maintain that making judgments on the success of one's design through listening is subjective and unscientific. They believe that only through the application of the right theories, or the strict adherence to a certain set of measurements can one reliably approach the ideal.

Alexandria XLF Yet the history of high-end audio is littered with electronics and loudspeakers that achieve sterling performance on the test bench, and yet, to the ears of even the average listener, fail to produce life-like sound. They lack the ineffable sense of rightness that momentarily suspends disbelief.

Dave is unapologetic about using his ears as a design tool because while fidelity of the live event may be difficult to measure, it is not difficult for even the casual listener to hear. But when listening becomes rigorous and disciplined - that is to say, empirical - it can bear even greater benefits.

Dave makes an annual pilgrimage to the great concert halls of Europe, particularly Vienna's Musikverein, as he puts it, "to recalibrate his ears." It is more than personal taste that justifies live classical music as the summum bonum of his musical reference. Besides the sophisticated interplay of tonal and harmonic color and wide dynamics typical of the orchestral repertoire, classical music performed in a hall such as the Musikverein takes on the quality of the venue itself. By luck or design, the builders of this concert hall created a space that enlivens the sound of musical instruments in a particularly beguiling manner.

Dave Wilson
Dave spent a great deal of time analyzing the Musikverein's acoustics. He discovered its sonic signature was largely defined by the length of time between the orchestra's initial sound and the earliest reflections in the hall. He then set out to build a new midrange driver that was capable of resolving these subtle timedomain cues. The result was the Wilson midrange driver, first deployed in Alexandria Series 2. Since then, a modified version has been designed into every other Wilson floorstanding loudspeaker.

Regardless of the type of music played through it, Wilson's midrange driver reveals new layers of detail and subtlety that the ear recognizes as qualities of live music. It was the direct result of meticulous scientific research and experimentation followed by comparative listening on the macro scale.

Years of design experience taught Dave Wilson that practically no detail is too trivial to examine. What about the twist ratios in the internal wiring? Or the metallurgy of the resistor heat sinks, since eddy currents in the mount can induce currents in neighboring resistors. He's meticulously tested capacitors and inductors.and even the solder used to bind all these parts together. After all these tests, he listens to each part in a controlled and repeatable environment.

Alexia

Alexia represents the first entirely new loudspeaker platform from Wilson Audio in nearly half a decade.

Two years in development, Alexia brings the superior propagation delay technology of Wilson’s flagship loudspeakers to a compact design with a footprint not much larger than a Sasha W/P.

Indeed, Alexia derives much of its DNA from the massive Alexandria XLF, and brings the same kind of state-of-the-art musicality to a speaker than can easily live in smaller rooms and more intimate listening environments.

Told by the members of the team that designed and built Alexia, the video below reveals the story of Alexia’s creation, from inception to completion. The challenges of building a compact, three-module loudspeaker were both aesthetic and techni- cal, and, indeed, the project—originally conceived before the Alexandria XLF—had to be put on hold until new drivers and new cabinet construction techniques were perfected in Wilson’s flagship loudspeaker, before the technology could be readily deployed in a brand new speaker platform.

The result is an exciting new benchmark in musical realism—not merely an enlarged Sasha, or a diminuitive MAXX, but an entirely new thing, one that completely rede- fines the performance envelope for a loudspeaker its size.

Independent research has demonstrated people are easily able to detect the sonic effects that result when the leading edge of transients from multiple drivers are misaligned in the time domain. In fact, listening trials have shown that timing er- rors on the order of 20 millioneths of a second are readily discernable to the ear. In musical terms, this translates into loss of focus, speed, transparency, and timbral accuracy. In other words, music sounds discerably less real.

Surprisingly, few loudspeaker designers are concerned with precise time alignment, and even those who are can, because of their cabinet designs, only align the drivers for one fixed listening distance and ear height.

Wilson Audio has long recognized the only way to build a loudspeaker capable of accurate time alignment in any number of listening environments is to offer both midrange and tweeter adjustability relative to the woofers. Furthermore, by allow- ing rotational adjustment on the polar axis, the dispersion of tweeter and midrange can be optimized for a wide range of listening positions and room types.

Prior to Alexia, this ability (which we call Aspherical Propagation Delay) has only been available on our largest loudspeakers, namely MAXX Series 3 and the Alexandrias. Anyone familiar with MAXX will rec- ognize the unique brass “stairstep” pictured above, now duplicated on Alexia, an integral part of its Aspherical Propagation Delay system. And with its compact profile, Alexia now makes the most precise and adaptable time alignment a reality for even the most intimate listening spaces

Central to the development of the flagship Alexandria XLF was the design of a new tweeter, which had to do three things: a) exhibit wide bandwidth with exceptional linearity, b) match the power-handling ability of the other drivers in the system, and c) play low enough in the frequency band to mate well with the acclaimed Wilson Midrange Driver. Dave Wilson auditioned all of the latest tweeter designs boasting exotic materials like diamond and berylium, and found them all deficient in at least one of the designated criteria. So he opted to create a new tweeter to meet his specifications. The resulting Wilson Convergent Synergy Tweeter has been recognized as a major contributor to the magic and musicality of the XLF.

It was, therefore, a foregone conclusion that a slightly modified version of this new tweeter would sit atop the driver stack in Wilson’s new compact statement loud- speaker, Alexia. As in any great design, however, the success of any one component is contingent on the synergy it achieves with every other contributor to the whole.

The development of the Wilson midrange driver for the Alexandria X2, based on Dave Wilson’s critical listening experiences in Vienna’s Musikverein Concert Hall, is by now a well known tale. So important was this breakthrough in driver technology, that the Wilson midrange is now used in appropriately modified contexts in every one of Wilson’s floorstanding loudspeakers. The version used in Alexia is virtually identical to the midrange found in the Alexandria XLF.

Finally, Alexia demanded two brand new woofers, an 8 inch and 10 inch, optimized over an eighteen month period to achieve a degree of bass extension unprecedented for an enclosure of its size, with- out sacrificing mid-bass detail, or the explosive speed and dynamic contrast that listeners have come to expect from Wilson Audio loudspeakers.

Succession is a fact of life in both royal dynasties and venerable audio products. It inevitably calls forth complex emotions, hence the resonance of the phrase above, reputedly first uttered upon the death of Charles VI of France, and thereafter part of the ritual of ascension in many European countries, including England.

For the past 23 years, no product represented the soul and history of Wilson Audio more than the WATT/Puppy. With well over 15,000 units sold since its inception, its place in the pantheon of great audio products is assured. Martin Colloms described the WATT in his landmark book, HIGH PERFORMANCE LOUDSPEAKERS, as the perfect enclosure. Its distinctive pyramidal shape has inspired numerous imitators.

The WATT was conceived of necessity. At the time (the early eighties), Dave Wilson was engineering a series of audiophile recordings and he needed an accurate location monitor. Nothing commercially available met his standards, so he decided to design and build his own. The WATT was in instant demand among Dave's professional peers. Once it was combined with a dedicated woofer cabinet (the Puppy), its long reign as audio's most successful over- $10,000 loudspeaker began.

From 1986, when the WATT was introduced at that year's Consumer Electronics Show, to 2009, the WATT/Puppy system evolved through seven revisions. New cabinet architecture, new enclosure materials, new drivers, the introduction (with System 6) of Aspherical Group Delay—all of these changes came as Wilson's loudspeaker technology progressed and found expression throughout the family of Wilson products—from Alexandria to Duette. The WATT/Puppy, as the paterfamilias, was never allowed to languish far behind Wilson's state-of-the-art.

So why not a System 9? Why a new loudspeaker that embodies the spirit of WATT/Puppy, evokes a similar form factor, but which can no longer simply be called a WATT/Puppy? Why was it time for Sasha?

Throughout its evolution, the WATT was always a self-contained, two-way loudspeaker. It had its own crossover; the WATT always had the capability of being removed from the Puppy and operated on its own. MAXX and Alexandria, meanwhile, were multi-cabinet loudspeakers that integrated drivers through crossover modules mounted in the bass cabinet, a design strategy that has many proven sonic benefits. The WATT/Puppy platform itself became the obstacle to fully leveraging the latest advances in cabinet materials, crossover design, and proprietary driver design. Sasha makes all of those things possible, while maintaining the central position in the Wilson product line held by its illustrious predecessor.

Upgrades
Both the new midrange/tweeter module and the bass cabinet have greater volume than W/P 8.

The larger bass enclosure results in a 2Hz greater extension in the bass, and less congestion in the upper bass.

Increased volume in the upper module allows a new bracing architecture and sidewall construction for greater rigidity and lower resonance.

Sasha's upper module utilizes Wilson's newest proprietary cabinet material for its baffle, resulting in a lower noise floor and greater transparency in the critical midrange.

Sophia 3

Dave Wilson once observed that, when the original Sophia was launched in 2001, it was inevitably described in the audio press as Wilson Audio's "entry-level" floor-standing loudspeaker. While Sophia remains Wilson's most affordable floorstander, focusing on price obscures an important fact—which was that price was incidental to Sophia's actual design objective. What Dave and the Wilson design team set out to create was a loudspeaker that—unlike its siblings at the time, X-1 GrandSLAMM and WATT/ Puppy— was less demanding of rooms and electronics. Sophia was designed to be a product easy to drive, easy to own, and one that invited its owner to just relax into the enjoyment of music.

Nevertheless, Sophia's true magic is that a speaker designed to sound so good with modest electronics will still reveal the nuance and detail of state-of-the-art gear. Impressive sales aside, it is Sophia "cult status" among audiophiles which speaks to the success of the original vision. It is not uncommon for Wilson customers who could easily afford the company's more expensive loudspeakers to choose Sophia—just because they love the sound.

Sabrina

Announcing the Sabrina

The inspiration for Sabrina arose from two distinct and seemingly disparate sources: the original WATT/Puppy, and the Alexandria XLF. The WATT/Puppy was the result of Dave Wilson’s belief that a well-designed compact loudspeaker could outperform many of the much larger state-of-the-art systems of its day. Sabrina is nearly the same size as its 1980s progenitor. The XLF, on the other hand, represents the current pinnacle of Wilson’s three-decades-long quest to bridge the gulf between live, unamplified music and its reproduction. The XLF platform offers the world’s most precise time-alignment capability, custom-designed drivers, and cabinet modules constructed from Wilson’s proprietary materials, reducing cabinet resonance and coloration to inaudible levels.

The objectivefor Sabrina was to take the wealth of knowledge and experience contained in the XLF and distill it down to its essence. To create a loudspeaker that, like the first WATT/Puppy, could stand alongside much larger systems and offer the kind of dynamic contrast and harmonic expression that is the defining character of Wilson Audio loudspeakers.

All-new Architecture Using Proven Materials

When it comes to a loudspeaker’s architectural design, Wilson’s philosophy is driven by the notion that a loudspeaker’s form is inextricably tied to its function. The unique physical features which are required in order to reduce propagation errors and lower enclosure panel resonances have for decades now given Wilson loudspeakers their look. Arguably, there is a form of beauty singular to the congruent interplay of technical and aesthetic ideals. Sabrina’s cabinet is hand-assembled, glued with proprietary adhesives, hand-sanded, gel coated, painted with multiple layers of automotive-grade paint, inspected, then polished and buffed to the same exacting standard as every other Wilson loudspeaker. The front baffle and bottom panels are built from Wilson proprietary composite, X-Material.

When the drivers in a loudspeaker array are aligned so that the leading edge of transients from each driver arrives at the listener’s ear at the same time, the result is a profound improvement in dynamics, harmonic detail, transparency—and in other important areas of sonic performance.

Put simply, all the things that characterize what the brain interprets as “real” in music reproduction. The adjustable driver modules in Wilson’s larger loudspeakers exist to provide unprecedented control over time-alignment in a large variety of listening environments. But in a single cabinet speaker such as Sabrina, the concept is still valid. Sabrina’s driver array has been time optimized for the typical listening room (hence the sloping front baffle of the loudspeaker).
